Writing Tasks & Quizzes

Write Tasks contains reusable typing exercises and multiple-choice quizzes. You can browse public activities, create your own, or complete an activity assigned to a lock.

ActivityCompletion ruleDuring the activity
Typing taskFinish the required lines, including extra lines, then submit the result.Mistakes reset the current line. Configured rules can add lines, lock time, or device actions.
Practice quizCorrect every answer, then submit the result.Incorrect answers can be retried. There is no per-question timer or scored-quiz outcome list.
Scored quizAnswer each question once and meet the required percentage to pass.Answers and timeouts are final. Configured outcomes can apply as the quiz progresses.

An activity can also be linked to an assignment in Tasks & Task Queue. Its writing or quiz rules still apply alongside that assignment's requirements.

Find an activity

Open Write Tasks. The library has these tabs when you are signed in:

  • Your write tasks: activities you created, with editing and assignment controls.
  • Public tasks: published activities from other users.
  • Favorites: activities you saved for later.
  • Typed for Me: results submitted to activities you created, including quiz results.

Open a card to read its introduction and rules before starting. Public browsing is also available while signed out, but sign in to associate results with your account and active lock.

If your lock requires keyholder consent for writing tasks, opening an unassigned public activity can be blocked. Use the activity actually assigned to you or discuss the setting with your keyholder.

Create a typing task

  1. Select Create task, then choose Typing task.
  2. Add a title and an optional Introduction explaining the exercise.
  3. Enter a single Line to type of 10–500 characters and choose 1–500 Repetitions.
  4. Choose Visibility. New activities default to Public; use Private if they should be limited to you and people with assignment access.
  5. Add an optional Reward (after completion), configure any interruptions and punishment rules, then save.

The reward field is a message or other rich-text content revealed after an accepted completion. It is separate from an automatic reduction in lock time.

Typing rules

SettingWhat it changes
Typo punishmentAdds the configured extra lines when a mistake is made. A typo resets the current line even when punishment is disabled.
Idle punishmentAfter typing has begun, adds extra lines when the configured inactivity threshold is reached. Further inactivity can trigger it again.
Lock-time punishmentAdds the configured minutes when an enabled typing punishment occurs, if the active lock is eligible.
Minimum typing speedChecks each completed line against the configured words per minute. A word is measured as five characters. A slow line can add extra lines and configured consequences.
Device consequencesTypo punishment and an enabled speed-shock rule can request device actions when the device and consent requirements are met.

Interruptions display the creator's messages during the exercise. The creator can choose their frequency, the part of the exercise in which they appear, their order, and whether typing is blocked while a message is displayed. They are separate from extra lines imposed by punishment rules.

Read the consequences before starting

Typing and quiz consequences can affect an active lock or connected device. An activity with device actions may require a suitable connection before you can proceed. Review the rules and your device settings first; delivery may be queued or unavailable. See Shock Delivery & Queues.

Create a quiz

Choose Quiz in the creation form. Add 1–50 questions, each with 2–6 different answer choices and exactly one correct answer. Add the title, introduction, visibility, and optional completion reward as for a typing task.

Use Scoring, time limits, and outcomes to choose the mode:

  • Off: practice mode, where participants retry until all answers are correct.
  • On: one answer per question, a passing percentage, optional timers, and optional outcomes.

For a scored quiz, configure:

SettingMeaning
Questions per attemptLeave empty for all questions, or choose a smaller random sample. Reloading keeps the current selection.
Shuffle question order / answer choicesRandomizes the order for a new attempt.
Time limit per answerOptional, from 1 second to 1 hour for each question. A timeout counts as an incorrect answer.
Percentage required to passFrom 1% to 100%. The exact fraction of correct answers decides the result, even if the displayed percentage is rounded.
Answer feedback and revealsControls whether participants see correctness after each answer, the correct answer after a mistake, and the final answer review.

For example, a ten-question quiz requiring 70% needs at least seven correct answers. A two-out-of-three result is below a 67% threshold even if a rounded display shows 67%.

Quiz outcomes

The editor has separate outcome lists for each correct answer, each wrong answer or timeout, passing, and failing. Each list can add or remove lock time, freeze the lock, apply pillory, or request a shock or vibration.

The last answer can trigger both its per-answer outcome and the final pass or fail outcome. For example, a wrong final answer can trigger the wrong-answer penalty and the failing penalty.

Configured lock and device outcomes require the quiz to be assigned to the wearer's active lock. Simply opening a public quiz does not enable those outcome lists. Successful unassigned activities can still be eligible for writing-completion credit on an active lock.

Turning off feedback does not make the outcome secret: an observable reward or penalty can still reveal whether an answer was correct. These feedback settings also do not hide finished answers from the quiz creator.

Generate, import, or export questions

Generate quiz with AI is available to subscribers. The current allowance is five generations per day, resetting at midnight UTC. You can request 1–20 questions and describe the subject in the generation instructions. Those instructions are sent to the AI service used for generation. Review the questions, choices, and marked correct answers before saving.

Generating or importing questions can replace the questions already in the editor. Review the confirmation before continuing.

Import or export quiz supports the app's JSON question format and a plain-text format with Q: for the question, * for its correct answer, and - for other choices:

Q: How many minutes are in an hour?
* 60
- 30
- 90

Export questions includes the answer key. Keep the file private if participants should not see it. The export is a question backup, not a complete backup of the title, visibility, introduction, reward, scoring rules, or outcome settings.

Assign an activity

There are several assignment paths, with different deadlines and results:

PathWhat to expect
Assign task from Your write tasksChoose a wearer on an active lock you own. The wearer must trust you. Set a completion window of 12 hours to 7 days and an optional late punishment of up to 7 days of lock time.
Linked task in the Tasks moduleOpen Writing Task or Quiz from that assignment. Check its own minimum time, completion deadline, points, and other outcomes in Tasks & Task Queue.
Generated quiz from a coach or programOpen the assigned quiz and review its rules, assignment expiry, and expiry consequences. These generated quizzes are specific to their assignment and are not editable library templates.

Direct library assignments use a separate slot from the Task module's open-task queue. A new regular direct assignment replaces the previous regular direct writing assignment. An active coach quiz must be finished before another direct assignment can replace it.

For generated assignments, see AI Coach and Programmable Locks.

Assignment deadlines and question timers

An assignment deadline is the time by which the activity must be completed. A scored quiz's time limit per answer only controls the current question. Complete the activity before whichever deadline comes first.

Assignment clocks start when the work is assigned, not when you first open it. Leaving the page does not pause them. A direct assignment that is still outstanding at its deadline can fail and apply its configured late punishment.

Coach-generated quizzes can expire before they are started, between questions, or while a question is open. Expiry ends that assignment as failed and applies its configured expiry outcomes, which can differ from the outcomes for finishing with a failing score.

An open quiz screen or a remaining question timer should not be treated as an extension of the assignment deadline. After finishing, check the assignment's status as well as the quiz result.

Complete a typing task

  1. Read the introduction, punishment rules, and any assigned deadline.
  2. Type the displayed line. Pasting or inserting several characters at once is blocked.
  3. Press Enter after matching the line. Repeat until all required lines, including any extra lines, are finished.
  4. In the completion panel, optionally add a message and select Submit results.
  5. Wait for the submission result and any completion reward. Check the assigned task and lock if completion was meant to earn credit there.

A typo clears the current line. Successfully typed earlier lines remain part of that attempt, but do not assume an unfinished exercise can be restored after leaving or reloading the page.

For signed-in users, the app attempts to save a completed result as a recoverable draft before final submission. This is not an extension of an assignment deadline. If the app says the completed result could not be saved, keep the page open and retry submission.

Saved as practice

A result can be saved as practice if its progress cannot be verified for the current task, assignment, or lock session, or if that session does not support verified completion credit. The app explicitly reports that no lock credit or time reward was applied. A saved result alone does not prove that an assignment or daily requirement was completed.

Complete a quiz

Practice mode

Choose an answer for every question, then use Check answers. Correct the questions marked wrong and check again. Once all answers are correct, use Finish quiz to save the result and reveal any completion reward. Signed-out participants use Submit quiz.

The absence of a per-question timer does not remove a deadline imposed by an assignment.

Scored mode

  1. Read the pass percentage, question timer, and outcome rules.
  2. Select Start or resume quiz when ready. Opening an existing attempt restores its current state.
  3. Choose an answer and use Submit answer. You cannot change it afterward.
  4. Use Next question to move on and start that question's timer.
  5. Review the passed or failed result. Use Finish quiz to submit an optional completion message and retrieve any earned reward content.

Reloading does not reset your attempt, answers, or current question timer. A question that expires while you are away counts as wrong. After an answer or timeout, the next question's timer starts when you advance; any assignment deadline continues in the meantime.

A scored attempt belongs to its quiz version and assignment. Reloading or choosing Start or resume quiz does not grant another try at a finished attempt. A new assignment can create a new attempt. If the creator changes the quiz and the app reports that it has changed, reload to obtain the current version.

Outcomes do not wait for Finish quiz

Scored answers, timeouts, and the final result are recorded as they happen. Their configured consequences can run before you select Finish quiz, and closing the page does not cancel them. The final button is not a confirmation step for applying penalties.

Rewards, credit, and device results

Completion rewards come in several forms:

  • Reward content: the creator's optional message, revealed after an accepted typing completion or a passed quiz.
  • Typing time reward: when lock-time punishment is configured, eligible completion can remove time based on its configured minutes and original repetition count. The calculation is half their product, rounded to whole minutes with a minimum of one minute. For an unassigned activity, this reward is capped at the time penalties recorded for that activity on the current lock.
  • Quiz outcomes: the correct-answer and passing actions chosen by the creator.
  • Linked task rewards: the points and time reduction configured on the Task module assignment. These are separate from the activity's own rules.

Where offered, Don't remove lock time opts out of time-removal rewards. It does not disable penalties, freezes, pillory, device actions, or the requirement to complete the assignment.

Time changes follow the active lock type, including frozen timers and Card Game conversion rules. Successful eligible completion can also count toward writing requirements; a linked task may separately count toward task requirements. See Penalty Requirements & Periods.

For scored outcomes, check the displayed status: an action may be applied, queued for delivery, skipped, or unable to apply. A queued device command is not confirmation that the physical action has finished. Use the lock's delivery status and Shock Delivery & Queues when investigating it.

Results and privacy

Public activity pages show recent participant results. These can include the participant's profile name and avatar, result time, typing statistics, quiz pass or fail result, and optional completion message. Failed scored quizzes can also appear. Do not put private information in a public activity's completion message.

Creators can review submissions under Typed for Me. For completed scored quizzes, the creator can review the participant's selected answers and the correct answers, even if participant feedback and the final answer summary were disabled.

Private activities restrict who can open them, but their results are available to people who have access through creation or assignment. Private does not mean visible only to the participant.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to check
An activity requires keyholder consentOpen your assigned activity or ask your keyholder to review the writing-task restriction.
Assignment is unavailableCheck that the lock is active, the wearer is assigned, and the keyholder is trusted. An active coach quiz can block replacement.
The quiz resumes instead of starting againScored attempts preserve their state. A completed attempt needs a new assignment or quiz version for another attempt.
A result saved but the lock did not changeLook for Saved as practice, an expired or changed assignment, Don't remove lock time, or an outcome marked skipped or failed.
A finished typing result has not appearedUse Submit results and wait for success. Keep the completion panel open if submission fails.
The quiz has changedReload and review the current questions and rules before proceeding.

When editing your own activity, changing between typing and quiz modes replaces the mode-specific configuration. Read the conversion confirmation before saving; it does not preserve both activities in one template.
